Due to concerns over the current status of the Coronavirus/Omicron Variant and in consideration of the health and safety of participants and the desire for everyone to err on the side of caution, we have made the decision to cancel the IFEA Leadership 100 Retreat this January 21-23, 2022. For those who registered for the Leadership Retreat, we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and ask for your understanding. We will be in contact shortly to coordinate a full refund.

IFEA Leadership 100 Retreat
January 21-23, 2022

Oglebay National Training Center
Wheeling, West Virginia, U.S.A.

Festival & Event leaders are known for their tenacity and resiliency through the most stressful of times, but the challenges of the past two years have not only taxed the Festivals & Events Industry as a whole, they’ve provided an especially trying and stressful challenge to the leadership of our industry, beyond what we ever imagined.

To continue to be a valuable and effective leader, it’s critical that you take time for yourself to reset, to refresh and to realign, and the IFEA Leadership 100 Retreat is designed to help you do just that.

With its sole focus is on YOU, as a leader, the IFEA Leadership 100 Retreat aims to help make sure you are refocused, aligned and motivated as you forge ahead, reinforcing the importance of investing in yourself as a good leader first, before you can be a good leader to others.

Areas of Focus Include:

Your Leadership Motivations & Values

  • Learn more about why you want to lead and why you are attracted to leadership roles and opportunities
  • Assess what motivates you the most
  • Identify your core values, including work-life balance
  • Make more conscious choices to align your motivations and values with the work you do
  • Clarify the connection between your leadership vision and your core values

Action Planning for the Future

  • Articulate who you are as a leader and your purpose for leading
  • Clarify specific goals for furthering your development as a leader
  • Develop an action plan for achieving your goals
We’ll also be covering critical areas of leadership that you will be able to take back home and use directly to raise the bar for your team and organizations (with instruction on how), helping them to navigate through any challenge:

Direction, Alignment & Commitment

How can you improve results through effective leadership? The Direction, Alignment and Commitment portion of our retreat will provide participants with the tools to enable internal conversations about what it takes to achieve better results and provide a framework that encourages individuals to work together as a cohesive group, producing collective results they could never achieve working as individuals.
  • Achieve a better understanding of the difference between a leader and leadership
  • Apply a framework for effective leadership
  • Assess how well leadership is happening at your event/organization
  • Create an action plan to improve leadership effectiveness.

Boundary Spanning Leadership

We live in a world of vast collaborative potential. Yet, all too often, powerful boundaries create borders that splinter groups into ‘Us’ and ‘Them’, leading to limited possibilities and uninspiring results. Participants will identify the most significant boundary they face within their organization - vertical, horizontal, stakeholder, demographic, or geographic. From there, participants will be introduced to the six boundary spanning principles:
Creating Safety | Building Trust | Advancing Interdependence | Fostering Respect | Developing Community | Enabling Reinvention.

‘Focus on the Future’

And, we’ll use the assembled ‘IFEA Leadership 100’ brain trust and ‘crystal ball’ of the gathered retreat leadership participants in a working session to:
  • Further our common industry knowledge
  • Share insights and perspectives
  • Identify and Prepare for what new challenges and opportunities may lie ahead

What Are People Saying About the Retreat?

“I can’t imagine a time when our industry has needed this type of leadership retreat more than ever. The last two years have been unprecedented in their challenges, and sometimes our ‘best practice’ needs to be taking care of ourselves as leaders. Staying refreshed, re-motivated, and re-inspired is critical to our continued success and sustainability.”
Ted Baroody, CFEE, President & CEO
Norfolk Festevents, 2020/21 IFEA World Board Chair
If I have learned anything during the pandemic, it is that staying on top of thought leadership in our profession is a valuable currency. The greatest industry source for that has been IFEA. Going to IFEA Leadership 100 is just the “good medicine” I need at this point, not just because of the content I anticipate, but the fellowship of being around my industry peers to share in both the struggles and the achievements of the past two years.
Bruce L. Erley, APR, CFEE, President & CEO
Creative Strategies Group
No matter the training one may receive in any field, if you don’t take time to work on yourself, I believe you will always fall short of your true greatness. Being able to do this leadership work in a room filled with other major players in our festival industry – who know and feel our specific challenges - is super exciting to me…I can’t wait to be energized together as we set out to conquer 2022!
Alison Baringer, CFEE, Executive Director
North Carolina Azalea Festival
As a leader in the event industry I have watched, the only consistency be inconsistency for the last two years. It has burnt out my community, my staff, and myself, I am excited to gather with other event leaders to refill my vigor for this industry. My hope is to come home with new ideas, strategies, and a few great memories.
Kat Paye, CFEE, Executive Director
